► In the City
There are over 55, 000 students in Liverpool, which has a huge impact on the city - both economically and socially. As a resident of Liverpool you have the opportunity to get your voice heard about a whole range of issues - from arts and culture events to making sure your recycling gets picked up.
Liverpool City Council runs a series of events called "Your Community Matters", which are open meetings with local councillors, police and other public agencies for all residents in each of the wards. This is a great opportunity to let your local representatives know what you think.
Liverpool City Council is responsible for the effective running of our city - from health and wellbeing, to housing, education and community coheshion. As a student here, you are entitled to vote in local council elections, and are represented by a local councillor. Find out who they are, and what they have been up to on the Liverpool City Council pages.
The role of the MP is to represent the interests of all the people in their constituency. As a student in Liverpool you can chose whether you want to vote in your home constituency or here. To register to vote here you need to visit the "about my vote" wesite. There are 5 MPs in the Liverpool area, you can find out who your current MP is here.
An MEP (Member of European Parliament) is elected to represent you in Europe. There are 9 MEPs for the North West region, you can find out who they are here.
The elections for MEPs were held last June (2009) under much controversy. LGoS was heavily involved in anti fascist campaigning. Find out more about the "Hope not Hate" campaign we were involved with and our statement on the election result here.
Liverpool has two main daily newspapers; the Daily Post and the Liverpool Echo.
