► Employability

Full text from the Consultation Document
11.     Employability

11.1   Liverpool is near the bottom of the Russell Group on measures of graduate prospects and the message from employers is that our students are often insufficiently prepared for employment.  Along with study skills, the curricula should enhance the employability of students, providing them with skills that are relevant to employers’ needs, as identified through consultation with employers. At PGT level in particular, for some programmes this will mean the professional development of students and the opportunity for them to achieve high professional competence in the field of study. As with research and teaching skills above, such skills should be embedded throughout the curricula, but serious consideration should also be given to the provision of specific instruction on employability which might be combined with study skills in a specific credit bearing module in the first year of the undergraduate curricula. For PGT curricula, employability skills could be provided in a dedicated module (that could also include study skills) that forms part of the credit of the award, or delivered as an optional, credit-bearing stand alone module.  (On employability matters guidance and advice will be available from Careers & Employability Service; whilst Educational Development can provide advice and guidance on study skills issues.)

11.2   The view expressed in this section has also come to recent prominence in the Government framework paper: ‘Higher Ambitions’, which states:

“We will ask all universities to publish a statement on how they promote student employability … all universities should be expected to demonstrate how their institution prepares its students for employment, including through training in modern workplace skills such as team working, business awareness, and communication skills”.

11.3   It is proposed that skills to enhance the employability of our students should be embedded and evidenced within our UG and PGT curricula.

LGoS believes:
  • Increased employability is one of the main reasons why students come to university, so employable skills are incredibly important for students, making these proposals welcome.
  • However the University must be aware that many people who already have careers skills come back to education during their lifetimes, and these people should not be made to undertake this sort of training- consideration should be given through consultation with Personal Tutors.
  • It has become clear that volunteering, and work within student societies and sports teams has increasingly become important for recruiters- is the University doing enough to encourage students to participate in these programmes? Perhaps if the University was to acknowledge student volunteering as part of the curriculum (in the Guild or wider society) this would incentivize students to participate, whilst going some way to fulfilling the University’s civic responsibilities. This may well have to be accomplished anyway, due to the Government’s Higher Education Achievement Record (HEAR) proposals.
  • It would also be advisable for the university to look at the programme that the Graduate School Skills Team uses for Post Graduate Research students, and ensure that the developments happening to the skills programme there are passed onto Undergraduate students.
