► President (Maev McDaid)
Welcome to the University of Liverpool, I am the new president of the Guild and I am very excited to be campaigning on your behalf for the next academic year. I am currently taking my Masters in Conflict Resolution and having studied here for 4 years, I have lots of experience in representing, lobbying and working for students. I know that starting university can be a daunting task for many of you but hopefully excitement will override any nerves that you have. Remember that Liverpool is a diverse city that has a lot to offer everyone!
Our job here at the Guild is to promote positive change so please keep in touch with me and the LGoS website for many important events that are coming up. Look out for our Peace Day event at the Guild on Wednesday 21st September from 3pm and on the following Wednesday (28th) we have a public meeting on the government's plan to privitize education. It will be in the Stanley theatre at 4.30pm and we'll talk about what the Guild will be focusing on to make sure that your education is being defended. Check out the website for details about transport to the 2nd Oct Demo in Manchester for Tory Party Conference with more info below!
Our new forum system is up and running and we are asking anyone who wants a say in what happens here at your university to come and say from October onwards. Keep an eye out for some of the brilliant events we are organising for Black History Month that range from the social and cultural to the political and activist to challenge racism and fascism in our society. We care about your experience here and work for all students whether you’re postgrad, international, part-time or mature.
We will be campaigning locally and nationally, fighting cuts, raising awareness and representing you. Get involved!
Take care in your first few weeks and do come say hello,
Maev McDaid
President 2011-2012
Why we're supporting the National Demo on Nov 9th
The decision to slash government funding to education and to triple tuition fees at university was a serious attack on students. It’s been almost a year since the teaching budget was slashed by 80% and the cap on fees was raised to £9,000. The White Paper on Higher Education proves even more vicious attacks on education are planned. It outlines systematic privatisation of Higher Education, where students become ‘consumers’ in a cut-throat, profit-hungry environment - alien to any notion of learning. These changes are too devastating to be ignored.
We must rally behind the slogan of “free education for all”. That means opposing every intrusion of the market onto our campuses. Students will be at the centre of the fight against these changes but we must also unite with other groups to defend education. We should reject the regime of austerity. We have the biggest student movement ever seen in Britain and last year saw glimpses of what is possible. And across Europe students are fighting with us. We should prepare for demonstrations, strikes and occupations to defend what is ours.
