► Environmental Projects at LGoS
In 2009, the Guild successfully secured funding for its very own roof garden. The LGoS Roof Garden is a student-run gardening and sustainability project based on the roof area of University of Liverpool Student Guild and is the only roof garden project in a university in the North-West that provides an environment to encourage wildlife to flourish in an urban university campus.
The Roof Garden brings a host of advantages, both economic and social. These benefits include insulating and protecting roof coverings, cleaning air and countering climate change, providing microclimates for fauna and flora and creating new spaces for living, working and entertaining. The Roof Garden has a bee hive, as well as four raised beds where various bedding plants, herbs and salads are being grown with the produce being used in LGoS catering and sold at the University's farmers market.

Green Fingers is a student-lead project based at the University of Liverpool’s Children Centre and was started just over a year ago by a small group of student volunteers. At its inception, the idea was mainly to focus on developing an accessible garden plot for the children to use and for the centre to have freshly grown organic fruit and vegetables available to cook with in the kitchen. After a year the plot now has a large patch for root vegetables, several raised beds for salad, fruit and herbs and a woodchip path around the outside and down the middle for easy access. The aim is to use the plot (which has had a small harvest this year) to help the children learn some important lessons about the benefits of healthy eating and sustainable produce that is grown by themselves.
LLT is a reduce, reuse, recycle project which aims to limit the amount of reusable items going to landfill during student changeover whilst improving student-community relationships.
Through minimising the amount of otherwise recyclable goods that go to landfill, the project works to increase sustainability in the city, remove unnecessary costs and amend the negative image often attributed to students, hoping to improve relations between students and the wider community as a consequence.

FoodCycle Liverpool, established in November 2010, is a student-led volunteer charity that tackles food waste in partnership with local supermarkets, by creating nutritious meals from reclaimed food in community kitchens. These delicious meals are then served to those in need in the community.
Re-Cycles, located downstairs in Liverpool Guild of Students, is a student led volunteer group which recycles old bikes into shiny new ones. We also repair bikes, teach bike maintenance skills, sell ethical bike parts, campaign for greater bike access (cycle lanes and shelters etc) and participate in group rides.
If you are interested in volunteering in any of the above projects please contact Kim Cooper at kcooper@liverpool.ac.uk
LGoS have introduced a new Book Swap Scheme in a bid to increase the availability of free literature for both staff and students, whilst working to reduce the number of books going to landfill. The scheme is simple:
1) Bring in an unwanted book.
A Clothes Recycling Scheme has been introduced to LGoS. We encourage staff and students to bring their unwanted clothes, bags and shoes to LGoS and donate them in the Clothes Bin, located by RBS bank. The aim of this project is to help staff reduce the amount of unwanted, reusable items going to landfill.
Liverpool Guild of Students also recycles mobile phones, batteries, printer and toner cartridges, spectacles, old computers and PCs; all of which can be left in LGoS base for collection.
If you have lots of unwanted books or clothes, or want to know more about these schemes, please email our Environmental Coordinator, Nick Doran: ndoran@liv.ac.uk
