Check out http://www.liverpooldrama.com for the latest news from the Society in 2008/09, and why not join our Facebook group while you're at it at http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=2209994787 ! This Society Covers: Acting LUDS produces and stages a number of performances each academic year, spread evenly over the two semesters. Each term you can usually expect around 4 productions, ranging from classical to contemporary, from comedy to tragedy. Membership to LUDS costs £5 and not only entitles you to discounts on all LUDS performances and merchandise, but also discounted theatre trips, regular socials, acting and writing workshops and perhaps most importantly, the opportunity to act, direct or work backstage in a LUDS production. Working in tandem with the Guild of Students, LUDS provides plenty of opportunities to flex your theatrical muscles, and plenty of support and guidance should you need it. As we are a student society, almost everything that goes into a LUDS performance is provided by students, from the lighting plan to the production posters, from the actors to the set painters. If you have masses of experience or none, whatever you want to do, LUDS has something on offer to suit you. Directors, Actors and Actresses, Technical Operators/Directors, Stage Managers, Set Design, Costume Design, Producers and Marketing Directors... the list goes on. Interested in Backstage work? If you have experience, fantastic - we can offer relative independence and funding to help you produce what you want. If you've never worked in theatre before, then what better time to give it a try? You'll be amazed how much fun you can have, and how much you can learn! We offer positions within the society for directors, assistant directors, techies, stage managers, producers, artistic directors (set design, costume & make-up design) and much much more, just drop us an email at info@liverpooldrama.com or sign up to our mailing list via Facebook or the Guild to learn more. With so many productions each term, LUDS provides masses of opportunities for aspiring actors and actresses. From leading ladies to workman number 3 we have parts to suit all abilities, so don't be put off if you've never acted before! Auditions are held in the Guild of Students near the beginning of each semester. They usually run over a couple of days in the afternoons and evenings so as to give you time to attend without missing lectures. If you pass the first round, recalls are held a couple of days after, once again in the Guild of Students, this is where people are given a little more time to read over the parts they are being considered for, allowing the Director more time to choose his or her cast. Don't get nervous when auditioning, remember - all our directors are still students like yourself! If you do manage to get into a production, rehearsals take place in various rooms around the Guild, commonly in the evenings. LUDS is a flexible society run by students, and our Directors work hard to allow you time off from rehearsals, and give you advance notice when you will be needed. Acting in a play is a commitment though, so make sure you don't miss too many rehearsals. Performances tend to run for 3-5 nights, and take place either in the James E Brown Room (capacity 80) or the Stanley Theatre (capacity 200), both in the Guild of Students. Tickets are sold at the BASE in the Guild, online from this webpage and also from specific directors, commonly priced between £3 and £6. We tend to sell quite a few tickets, so you'll be guaranteed an audience for anything you put work into. LUDS are currently looking at expanding into new venues around Liverpool. Provisional suggestions have been made for open air performances, and performances at larger venues. Let us know if you're interested in any of these ideas, or have any yourself. It's not just plays we do either - this term you'll get the chance to get involved with regular drama workshops covering everything from how to audition to costume design, not to mention the new writing group. We also run the highly successful Sticky Floor Improv Group, who perform a fortnightly improvisation based comedy evening - providing the chance to perform and write comedy sketches, stand-up and whose line is it anyway style improvisation games. And if that wasn't enough we also host the Guild Event of the Year 2007/08 - The Halloween Ghost tour. A spooky trip around the guild, written and performed entirely by the society.LIVERPOOL UNIVERSITY DRAMA SOCIETY (LUDS)
