Welcome to the LGBT.

Whether you are a fresher or an old hand, the LGBT is there to support you in your time at university. Some of you may be very new to the experiences of being lesbian, gay, bisexual or trans and it can be a daunting prospect arriving at university. The LGBT committee is there to help support you through your experiences and help out when you encounter any difficulties. Through our buddying scheme we can provide people to listen to your anxieties, offer our support and introduce you to the scene in Liverpool, should you wish so.

For those of you that are surer of your sexuality, the LGBT has information about all aspects of gay life in Liverpool from the club scene to health issues. We put on regular socials so that you can meet other like minded people in Liverpool and from other universities and most importantly have fun in the process.

We campaign both locally and nationally to improve the situation of LGBT people and will deal with any instance of discrimination or homophobia that you may face. We will act as your voice in the Guild of Students, in the university in general and in the annual NUS conferences.

We will keep you updated with all the relevant news via our email list including what's going on in the University, in Liverpool and nationally.

While the committee likes a good laugh there is also a serious side to our activities. The world may be a more accepting place but we still face legal inequalities, discriminatory policies and outright homophobia on too regular a basis. We are committed to campaigning for your rights, freedoms and safety and will do our best to deal with any discrimination, homophobia, transphobia or bi-phobia that you may face during your time at university. The LGBT is quite prepared to go down to offending clubs, bars and other establishments to fight your corner but, we can only do it if you tell us about it. We also work closely with the NUS and local groups to try to achieve our goals.

The LGBT now also have a confidential e-mail address which can only be accessed by welfare committee members. Worried about a specific issue? Have an incident of homophobic abuse to report? If you ever wish to contact a welfare committee member, do not hesitate to use the following e-mail; Liverpoollgbtwelfare@googlemail.com.

Finally we have committee positions open for those of you that want to get involved in the provision of welfare, co-ordination of campaigns, running events or just helping out.

So if you want to get involved with the LGBT (and want something impressive to write on your CV) then make yourself heard through an email; liverpoollgbt@googlemail.com, at the fresher's fair or by coming into the office to talk to us. Or check out our Facebook group to instantly add yourself as a member of the LGBT society; Liverpool Guild LGBT Facebook Group.

In Pride,

Liverpool Guild LGBT Society.
