Last Thursday Northwest and UK voters went to the polls to decide the MEPs for the European Parliament. Though we are disappointed with the results, Liverpool Guild of Students would like to thank all those who voted by post and in person.
Liverpool Guild of Students values equality, diversity and social justice. On Sunday 7 June, the European elections presented us with a significant challenge to continue to uphold and defend these; to address the low voter turnout and to educate students and the wider community that the problems we face today as a society are in their hands; and that engaging in the political process can and must bring about change. At the same time, LGoS will continue to lobby our representatives, both locally and nationally, to address the inequalities which we all face in society and to hold them to account about the decisions they make.
Now, more than ever, is not a time to ignore politics. Now is the time to face our discontent head on, and not turn away. This is a challenge which we all face, one which threatens our values and way of life. What happened on Sunday the 7th was due to a low turnout at the ballot boxes, not an upturn in racism and hatred. LGoS will continue to mobilise and organise to fight racism and fascism, keeping with our commitment to diversity and equality in our city and beyond.
