More about the LGoS Roof Garden....
The Guild brings you a unique volunteering opportunity - The LGoS Green Roof project.
Roof gardens bring a host of advantages, both economic and social, which include:
The roof garden has four raised beds where various bedding plants, herbs and salads are being grown. The produce is used in LGoS catering and will be sold at the University's farmers market. It is also home to two beehives, a bird table and four bird nests. Two staff members and one student are currently trained as beekeepers. We will be running another beekeeping course in second semester.
LGoS has partnered with the local charity 'Amy & Friends' who support Cockayne Syndrome sufferers and their families. Volunteers are working with the charity to develop the garden. Volunteers will also be engaging other charities and local school groups in the project. A schools project with Blackburn house will be launched in January 2010.
This project is partly being funded through the NUS Fresher Fresher's initiative. Through this initiative, Homebase has provided LGoS with funding towards resources for the garden including plants, seeds, pots, planters, tools and compost.
Sian McCall (3rd year vet student) said "Being able to say I've completed the beekeeping course and had practical experience with caring for a beehive will be an advantage in future career development".
"I am so pleased that we have been able to assist such an innovative project. This is just the sort of legacy activity that the Year of the Environment2009 was established to promote and it is a great example of young people of the city working together creating a truly sustainable city." Councillor Berni Turner, the Executive member for Environment at Liverpool City Council
