Food Cycle

Food Cycle

This student-led project is backed by FoodCycle, a student-led food charity here in the UK. FoodCycle is comprised of multiple student-led projects located at universities across the UK and one small central office.

The projects are run end-to-end by student volunteers. In return for their time and effort, our volunteers develop an array of REAL skills in leadership, organisational development, financial management, and community networking.

How does it work?

FoodCycle uses the synergy of donated food, volunteer time and an idle kitchen space to create positive social change in the community.

The idea is simple. Food retailers throw out millions of tons of edible food every year due to supply overstock. The aim of FoodCycle is to redirect this food so it can be used to cook nutritious meals for people in the local community that do not have access to it for a variety of reasons, such as lack of income, access or knowledge of healthy nutrition. The result? People’s health benefit from better food, food waste is reduced, and volunteers get the satisfaction that they have helped improve their local community!
