 What is Leave Liverpool Tidy?
LLT is a reduce, reuse, recycle project which aims to limit the amount of reusable items going to landfill during student changeover whilst improving student-community relationships.

What is student changeover?
This is the period over summer when housing contracts end and when large numbers of students and non-student community members move out of their accommodation and into new homes.

What is the problem?
During this time, vast quantities or items are left out on the streets as rubbish, creating much anger and high waste levels within local communities. This anger is directed at the students who are seen as the main producer of this mess. Therefore during this time there are poor student and non-student community relationships.  The items left on the streets are sent to landfill, at the expense of the council, when in reality large amounts of these items are reusable and should be recycled.

Project Objectives:

In a response to these issues within communities, Leave Liverpool Tidy has 3 objectives:

1) Collecting reusable items and holding a series of free shops and community free shops where people can collect items they need for free, thereby diverting items from landfill and creating a more sustainable community.

2) Donating items to local hostels, shelters and refuges where donations will be gratefully received. Thus showing a positive image of students taking responsibility within their communities, whilst diverting items from landfill and supporting local groups.

3) Proving volunteering opportunities for both student and non-student community members to facilitate their interaction and cohesion, promoting a positive image of students in the community.

Project Context

Leave Leeds Tidy was originally set up in Leeds and has been running for five years there. In Leeds 2009,  the project diverted over 23 tonnes of reusable materials from landfill and helped over 20 Community Centers with donations and by holding 'free shops'.  The project and its coordinators also won local and national awards recognising their hard work.

Why volunteer?

LLT is a really fun project to be involved in. Volunteers can get hands on with sorting all the donations, collecting the bags from across Liverpool, distributing donations to all the local charities and running Free Shops. You get to meet such a wide variety of amazing people and volunteers get first choice to take any donations. You can pick up some really great CDs, DVDs, clothes, kitchen equiptment and even furniture. Also- if you volunteer for a whole day- we will even give you a free lunch!

How can you be involved?

There are a number of coordinator roles available, from organising publicity to running our free shops.  We are currently securing funding for this year and will soon be recriting volunteers and a project coordinator to help run the scheme.  For more information please email kcooper@liv.ac.uk.
